Cranial-Dental Balance:

Hidden Keystone in Systemic Wellness

“80% of chronic illnesses originate between the head and the collar bone.”

Many people suffer from fatigue, brain fog, pain, and depression, even if they eat right, exercise regularly, take vitamins.  Others wonder why chiropractic adjustments do not hold.  What is amiss?

A misaligned body cannot be expected to heal well.  An often-neglected piece of the puzzle is cranial-dental imbalance: subtle distortions of the head-jaws-teeth complex.  Small misalignment here can eventually lead to big effects such as headaches, dark bags under puffy eyes, fatigue, mood disorders, low back pain, “TMJ” problems, broken and worn teeth.

Skeletally, the head is made of 11 bones in sliding or breathable joints called “sutures”. The back half the head (cranium) houses the brain, and the front half is the face.  The upper jaw is attached to the front half, and the lower jaw is joined to the back.  The two halves of the skull are united by the dental bite.  Mismatched dental bite deforms the head, and a “stuck” suture can skew jaws and the bite.  As 80% of the nervous system is above the neck, cranial-dental balance is a keystone in systemic health.

The cranial-dental complex is connected to the spine’s end (sacrum) structurally and neurologically. This cranial-dental-sacral chain can be kinked or compressed by traumatic accidents, or more frequently, by repetitive injuries from flat feet, uneven pelvis, and dental bite.  The cranial-dental-sacral connection explains why low back pain often is coupled with a TMJ-dental bite distortion, while head-jaw aches is frequently found with rotated pelvis and turned feet.

Teeth and jaw joints affects systemic health in another repetitive way.  Swallowing is a critical survival function that is dependent on the dental bite.  As we swallow 2,000 times a day, a bad bite can lock in and perpetuate a faulty cranial-sacral structure.  Dental correction should be included for chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, and medical care, to be more effective.

Pain and fatigue arise readily from fighting gravity with a misaligned body with distorted posture.  Healing and wellness can be greatly facilitated by leveling and decompressing the entire cranial-dental-sacral-feet system. Teamwork is required among like-minded dentists, doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturist, physical therapists, nutritionist, mental-emotional therapists, and the patient.

The body is one integrated structure from feet to teeth.  All too often, hidden in chronic illness is a dental-cranial distortion coupled with an uneven bite, and a set of missing, broken, or much dental work that continues to feel “off”.  To find out if your dental bite is a factor in your whole, call     Whole Health Dental Center for a TMJ-Systemic consultation.
